Drug-Based Hair Balding Treatments Weighing the Pros and Cons
Who doesn’t want to win the fight against hair loss? While some people have embraced baldness for the rest of their lives, most sufferers are in dire straits searching for the best hair balding treatments for them, if not for that one cure. Hair loss is not a shallow case of vanity, not even for a man. Especially for young sufferers, hair loss is a daily nightmare. Their horror stories are proofs that hair loss is something one can never understand until and unless one experiences it.
Sufferers can only hope for a cure. For the time being, they will only have to depend on some treatments available nowadays. This is an added distress as it is difficult to sort out which works, which doesn’t.
Minoxidil
For both men and women, there is Minoxidil 5% and 2% respectively. Minoxidil is a strong topical solution causing vasodilatory effects, that in turn, stimulate miniaturized hair follicles to produce hair again. This drug is just two drug-based hair balding treatments approved by the Food and Drug Administration.

The Hair Weathers, Too
Spending too much time in the wind and sun can cause your skin to weather. But do you know that that can happen to your hair too? Too much wind and sun exposure can cause structural damage to the hair. If you have seen a surfer’s hair that has been damaged and bleached by exposure to salt water and the sun, then you already have a good idea of what it means to have a weathered hair.
Weathered hair is a frayed hair. It does not only make you look older than your calendar age, it also diminishes your attractiveness. When the hair weathers, it only damages the hair shafts and not the follicles themselves.
Causes of Hair Weathering
Overtime, the structural proteins in the hair shafts will eventually break down so that the hair appears aged. This is the normal structural breakdown which can be accelerated by the following factors:

The Essence of Chamomile for Hair Care
The use of chamomile as an herbal medication can be traced back to ancient Greece and Egypt. This plant was used by priests as a means to rejuvenate the hair and skin. It was also used as an anti-fever medication.
For years, we have used the fragrant flowers of chamomile to cure ailments like stomachache; insomnia anxiety; and skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, chickenpox, and rashes.
Chamaemelum nobile (formerly Anthemis nobilis) or chamomile is native to Africa, Europe, and Asia. This low-growing perennial plant from the daisy family has been used to create teas to treat a number of health problems. The active ingredient found in chamomile is known as bisabolol, which has anti-inflammatory, anti-irritant, and anti-microbial properties.
Chamomile is available as an essential oil, which can be used for scalp massage to stimulate hair growth. Its extracts can also be added to any shampoo and conditioner to help retain the hair’s moisture.

Hair Loss Treatment for Man, Here’s an Alternative to Finasteride
Today, there are almost as many men who are bald as there are follicularly gifted ones. Hair loss affects nearly half of the world’s adult male population. While not fatal, hair loss pulls down the male ego.
Since the early days, science has always been on the process of developing various treatment techniques for alopecia, if not geared towards the search for a cure. Out of the many folk remedies for hair loss, saw palmetto receives the most scientific attention, especially in the development of a hair loss treatment for man.
Saw palmetto is a dwarf, palm-like tree that bears berries, which are dark red or brown. Before it was marketed to treat hair loss, saw palmetto has been commercialized as a supplement for reducing enlarged prostate glands and relieving urinary tract problems in men for many years.
Now considered as the “men’s herb,” saw palmetto is a hair loss treatment for man. It contains a certain amount of beta-sitosterol (a type of phytosterol) and liposterols. These substances curb any hair-loss-causing androgenetic activity, particularly dihydrotestosterone build-up in the follicles.
More exactly, saw palmetto inhibits type II of 5-alpha reductase enzymes from converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT alters the method by which the follicles absorb nutrients, and thus, causes hair loss as the follicles reduce in size due to malnutrition.
Saw palmetto is often referred to as the counterpart of finasteride, the synthetic DHT inhibitor. However, compared to finasteride, saw palmetto is easier to absorb by the body. Aside from that, it doesn’t interfere with the production of testosterone, which explains why it doesn’t produce any sexually related side effects.
Saw palmetto is often used in conjunction with nettle root and pumpkin seeds, which are rich in beta-sitosterol. As a hair loss treatment for man, it is available as tablets, capsules, liquid extracts, or often contained in hair loss products such as Leimo.

Unraveling the Solutions for 4 Hair Problems
The moment you start reading this article, approximately 99.9% of women all throughout the world are fretting over their imperfect strands. The remaining 0.1% is either: (a) dead, or (b) models for shampoo commercials.
The statistics presented above is fictional of course, but the fact that the hair is one of the most important features of a woman remains. Every girl, in a way or another, experiences various hair problems in their lifetime. That is why it is only necessary for one to practice a good hair care regimen.
But what exactly constitutes a good hair care regimen? The following are the four major hair problems and their corresponding solutions:
Hair Dilemma No. 1: Frizz
Frizz occurs when the hair absorbs moisture caused by a spike in humidity. This leads the hair follicles to expand and the hair to kink up.
Hair that has been permed, bleached, or coloured is prone to frizz since hairstyling products are major culprits that dry the hair.
Usually those with thick and curly hair are also the ones pressed with this problem.

Experts Identify Inhibitor Causing Male Pattern Baldness and Target for Hair Loss Treatments
-->
Researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have identified an abnormal amount a protein called Prostaglandin D2 in the bald scalp of men with male pattern baldness, a discovery that may lead directly to new treatments for the most common cause of hair loss in men. In both human and animal models, researchers found that a prostaglandin known as PGD2 and its derivative, 15-dPGJ2, inhibit hair growth. The PGD2-related inhibition occurred through a receptor called GPR44, which is a promising therapeutic target for androgenetic alopecia in both men and women with hair loss and thinning. The study is published in Science Translational Medicine.
Male pattern baldness strikes 8 of 10 men under 70 years old, and causes hair follicles to shrink and produce microscopic hairs, which grow for a shorter duration of time than normal follicles.
Researchers took an unbiased approach when scanning for potential biological causes of baldness, looking in scalp tissue from balding and non-bald spots from men with male pattern baldness and then corroborating findings in mouse models. They found that levels of PGD2 were elevated in bald scalp tissue at levels 3 times greater than what was found in comparative haired scalp of men with androgenetic alopecia. When PGD2 was added to cultured hair follicles, PGD2-treated hair was significantly shortened, while PGD2's derivative, 15-dPGJ2, completely inhibited hair growth.
"Although a different prostaglandin was known to increase hair growth, our findings were unexpected, as prostaglandins haven't been thought about in relation to hair loss, yet it made sense that there was an inhibitor of hair growth, based on our earlier work looking at hair follicle stem cells," said George Cotsarelis, MD, chair and professor of Dermatology, and senior author on the studies. In a Penn study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation last year, underlying hair follicle stem cells were found intact, suggesting that the scalp was lacking an activator or something was inhibiting hair follicle growth.
Prostaglandins are well characterized for their role in many bodily functions — controlling cell growth, constricting and dilating smooth muscle tissue — and a different prostaglandin (F2alpha) is known to increase hair growth. Researchers found that as PGD2 inhibits hair growth, other prostaglandins work in opposition, enhancing and regulating the speed of hair growth.
While these studies looked at AGA in men, the researchers noted that prostaglandins may represent a common pathway shared by both men and women with AGA. Future studies, potentially testing topical treatments that may target GPR44, can determine whether targeting prostaglandins will benefit woman with AGA as well.
The research team consisted of Dr. Cotsarelis, lead author Luis Garza, MD, PhD, (former post-doctoral fellow at Penn, now at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine) and Yaping Liu (now at Merck & company), Zaixin Yang, Brinda Alagesan, Scott Norberg, Tailun Zhao, Hanz Blatt, from Penn's Dermatology department; Garrett FitzGerald and John Lawson from Penn's Department of Pharmacology and the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics; David Stanton and Lee Carrasco from Penn's Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and colleagues at Gillette, and University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
The study was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (R01-AR46837, P30-AR057217, 5R01AR055309 and K08AR055666, 5-P30-AR-057217-02), the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Edwin and Fannie Gray Hall Center for Human Appearance at Penn Medicine, American Skin Association, Dermatology Foundation and L'Oreal. Drs. Cotsarelis and Garza are co-inventors on a patent owned by the University of Pennsylvania describing the PGD2 pathway as a target for inhibiting hair loss.

Hair loss triggers toupee, goatee debate
On Thurs. March 22 I woke up to find five hairs had fallen from my head and rested atop my pillow. This is five times more than the usual — one. While some of you wouldn’t consider this cause for concern and would probably ignore it, I took a different approach and prepared for my imminent baldness.
As a below-average looking guy, there isn’t much room between the way I look now and a completely unacceptable physical appearance. If I lose my hair I could be dangerously close to crossing the line into, “walk around the block to avoid me” ugly. Granted, my hair is probably only my eighth-best feature, but without it, I expose my third-worst feature, my sixth-worst feature and my ninth-worst feature: my oddly shaped head, inability to grow a cool goatee and the Texas-shaped birthmark behind my ear, respectively.
I wasn’t planning on growing a goatee until well into my 30s. But as we all know, bald guys have goatees. Or have at least tried the goatee look. Taking the leap to grow a goatee is scary, especially for me, since my facial hair is weird looking. Go ahead and mess around with a mustache, but you absolutely do not want to grow a goatee until you’re positively ready. I’m not ready. But without hair on my head I would have to abide by the unwritten rule to attempt it.
I know myself. I’ll be one of those bald guys who can’t let it go. I’ll try the comb over look, and maybe even the bald guy pulled back ponytail look. My only hope is that my friends or family will be kind enough to tell me how ridiculous I look before it’s too late.
Some guys can pull off hair loss: Bruce Willis, Michael Jordan, Professor Cecil. They don’t know how lucky they are; it doesn’t end well for the rest of us. If I knew losing my hair would make me look like John McClane, I’d be like, “Heck yeah, bring on the bald!” But no, I will look like E.T. So I’ve decided that when my baldness occurs, I will be a toupee wearer and there is nothing wrong with that. Okay!?
Baldness doesn’t really run in my family, but neither does awesomeness, and I’ve pretty much been rocking that since birth. Anything is possible. I have already ordered three toupees online from a sketchy toupee-selling website that probably identity-thefted me already. Once, and if, they arrive in the mail I will post pictures and tally your votes for the best one. Hopefully by the time I need to wear it, you’ll have forgotten all about this and I can go on with my hair having life. Only time will tell.

Is a Hair Transplant Procedure Advisable for Women
There is no denying the fact that hair transplant procedures are the only immediate and semi-permanent solution for hair loss
to date. Hair restoration involves the extraction of non-balding hair
follicles that are replanted on the areas where the baldness is most
striking.
Traditionally, surgical solutions to baldness were introduced as a hair loss treatment for men alone, particularly when the condition no longer responds to medical intervention. However, with modern technology, people’s evolving creativity, and women’s increasing demand for it, prompted hair loss experts to offer hair restoration to women.
Hair restoration has become a mainstream corrective treatment option for women with alopecia. Because most women with alopecia only experience diffuse hair thinning, hair restoration was not really an option for them. Aside from that, women only mostly experience temporary forms of alopecia; therefore, treatment may not be necessary at all.
Take for example the case of a new mother who underwent traumatic child delivery. She can experience a temporary form of hair loss called telogen effluvium. This is also possible when a woman experienced severe stress.

Male dandruff and hair loss – a real headache!
In the same way as the skin, hair also renews itself every 20-30 days. But when the machine goes into overdrive, the scalp can behave badly… dandruff and falling hair are the most common problems.
Hair hygiene and dandruff?
While some cases of dandruff can be caused by endocrinal disorders or an allergy, pollution, stress, fatigue and unhealthy eating are common aggravating factors. All of these factors can cause the scalp to shed, in other words cause dandruff.
In men with oily hair, the dandruff is often also linked to hair loss. This type of dandruff appears on oily scalps, forming stubborn yellowy scabs, which are often quite itchy. Dry dandruff is those pesky little white flakes with fall like snow from the head and are easily noticed on the shoulders. Dry dandruff is easier to treat than oily dandruff, which is more difficult to get rid of.
Simple anti-dandruff advice
If you are going through a difficult or highly stressed patch, try, as far as possible to stick to a healthy lifestyle:
* Balanced eating;
* Sufficient sleep ;
* Physical exercise.
Look after your hair by washing it at least once a week, using an adapted anti-dandruff treatment.
If your dandruff is accompanied by rashes or itching, it could be seborrhoeic dermatitis or psoriasis. If in doubt, it’s advisable to consult a dermatologist to get a professional diagnosis and a suitable treatment.
The male curse of hair loss
Hair is constantly growing, with some dying and falling while others are born or in a growth phase. Every day we naturally lose between 20 and 100 hairs, which is a normal phenomenon, but which can go amok under certain circumstances. Summer and winter are times of the year when the hair is more easily aggressed by the elements – sun and sea in summer, heating and hats in winter.
Stress, a surgical intervention, prolonger fever or an overly restrictive diet can all provoke hair loss over the following months. In many cases, the lost hair will grow back naturally, but if you are unlucky enough to suffer from androgenic alopecia, your hair will not grow back.
By looking after your hair and lifestyle, you can fight against such occasional hair loss. You’ll need to be patient, as it’s only 3-4 weeks of care (diet, adapted hair product etc.) that you will see a turnaround. So make a little effort and your crowning glory will be back in full force.
Androgenic alopecia and permanent hair loss
Behind this medical term hides a common phenomenon: total or partial baldness, which currently affects millions of British men. This hair loss, also known as male-pattern baldness is due to an over activations of male hormones in certain hair follicles. Genetics play an important role in this male baldness, and in many cases, all the men in a given family will suffer from baldness. In certain severe cases, this permanent hair loss can begin in a young man’s late teens, ending up in total baldness a decade later.
The hair loss will normally start around the temples and then the crown of the head. While there no miracle cure for this hair loss exists, despite what all the marketeers may tell you, if the problem is treated from very early on, the treatment is generally more efficient.
If you are feeling worried about an increase in hair loss, or hair loss that is ongoing, don’t hesitate to speak with a dermatologist, who will be able to prescribe you more specialized products that those that you’ll find in the supermarket or OTC at the chemist.
